The municipal district of Alfoz de Lloredo is located in the western part of the region of Cantabria, in Northern Spain. With an extensión of 30 square miles, it is sited between the medieval village of Santillana del Mar -home of the world´s finest prehistoric caves, Altamira-, the charming city of Cabezón de la Sal and the seaside town of Comillas, where the visitor can enjoy one of Gaudí´s architertural wonders: “El Capricho de Gaudí”.
The towns included in this district are: Cigüenza, Cóbreces, La Busta, Novales (capital), Oreña, Rudagüera and Toñanes. It has aproximately a census of 2.700 people, although it almost double its population during the summer months.
Over the centuries, Alfoz de Lloredo has mainly based its economy on farming and mining. However, more recently services and and a growing sustainable tourism have become and integral part of its economic development.
The landscape, monuments and friendly people are indeed one of the reasons why visitors have made of Alfoz de Lloredo a permanent base for their holidays in Cantabria, availing of a considerable number of high quality rural houses (bed&breakfast) and other types of accomodation.
The Roman influence in the district has left important remains, ruins and roads –such as “Via Agrippa”. Given its privilege location, it was and still is a key crossroad for pilgrims on their way to the “Camino de Santiago”.
The visitor can find in all villages of the district a distinctive architecture, from the “San Martín” church, an interesting mixture of Spanish barroque and colonial art, to the monastic complex of Cóbreces or various traditional houses and palaces.
The district capital, Novales, received in 2005 the “Pueblo de Cantabria” award for its uniqueness and beauty. The nearest beach, “Luaña” in Cóbreces, attracts every year many visitors and locals, altough the inland towns, such as La Busta and Rudagüera, have built their own niche offering a traditional rural turism and a recognised regional gastronomy.
Alfoz de Lloredo is alive! Not to be missed. A world of contrast. A microclimate down in the valley welcomes the visitor with lemon trees and orange fragances. Its coast, mountains and people are safe bet.
